By “striking” is meant “attracting your interest or attention because of some unusual feature” (Macmillan). The politically correct would likely have us strike the term, er, omit it, from use since it has a violent background. So don’t let the shady origin of the word distract you from your mission today.
This will be a difficult nudge, since so much of what Jesus’ said had this quality, especially to his original hearers. We’ve lost much of the edge, much of the offensiveness, of his words, because we’ve heard them so much. As I write, multiple sentences pop into mind. Which will I choose? Which will you choose?
