    My Absence

I feel I need to explain my absence from TFR while I can. As I write this I have very little to no feeling in my right hand, especially my thumb, index and middle fingers, thus making a lot of typos and corrections. I am looking at having spinal stenosis in my neck vertebrates. I have a pending appointment with a neurologist to either confirm or find a different reason for the numbness and tingling in my arms and fingers. I know I already have three bulging disc in my lumbar area and stenosis in the vertebrates in that area. this has been my reason to stop my input in the prior months because I could not sit in front of the computer but for very short periods of time before having severe pain. I have been seeing a chiropractor about the lumbar area and it has helped. I walk with a very unsteady gait, I have fallen or had to get down at a low level not being able to get up with out a lot of difficulty.

I still read most of your postings and am encouraged by what I read. I would appreciate your prayers in this matter. Thank you and praise God for the wonderful brothers and sister in His kingdom.

    Jim

Whgat does home mean to me?

Home means my sanctuary. Linda and I just discussed this last week. It is my place away from the rest of the world. Home is where the heart is as far geography. My heart is in Texas. So are my boots. seriously, as a pilgrim is this world, 1 Peter 1, heaven is my home. When my journey here in this life is over, then I’ll go home. Praise God, for my real home.

What connotations does “authority” hold for me?

Submission! Being raised in an abusive environment I used to have a lot of authority issue problems. For one, I was rebellious. I believe it was after a congregational Bible study by a preacher that I began to wilt in my relationship with God. I was never going to make it, because I could never be good enough. That was a subconscious message in my head from never being good enough or being a failure from my parental father. It wasn’t until I was in my fifties that I learned what unconditional love was all about. Once I got the old messages out of my head, I could related to God as a loving heavenly Father. I now look at myself as a mere speck of sand and in awe that God cares, but he does. That is what authority is to me now. I am just a speck of sand in all of God’s creation, who am I to put myself on the same level or above God. People do it, but deny that is what they are doing. When ever you hear some one say or read “I” when discussing what the Bible teaches, they are putting themselves equal to or above God. There is no submission to authority, but to their own. To me they are arrogant and self serving, putting themselves in hell.

Jim, you must have had the same kind of critical controlling father that I had. Thank God we’re free of that kind of influence! You make a great point regarding our obedience to authority – submission. That quality is necessary in all relationships if we are to get along with one another.

Jim, this is the kind of answer I was looking for. Of course, not everyone has been through your experience. But the question of authority always seems to have an emotional element, positive or negative, because it’s connected, as you observed, to our parents and especially to our fathers. God be praised for giving you opportunity to work through these issues.

      • jimnewy 9:55 pm on April 11, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I was able to relate right away after you posted it. It takes more than God and prayer to rid oneself of all those old messages. They have to be erased and replaced with positive messages of God’s unconditional love. Yes, praise God, I was able to work through my past. Of course I had to ask, and it has made me a more loving compasionate person. Praise the Lord for that also.

Catching up on some Daily Nudges

Who is my best friend? Out side of my wife, which is family I don’t really have one that is as close to me or me to them as my wife. The closest friend I have is my preacher friend that The good Lord, myself and 300 plus congregations and individuals have been helping financially to get a liver transplant. He considers that he owes me his life, but no, he owes his life to God and a lot of other people.

As for what question made the biggest difference in my life, I would have to say, “Now what will you do’? This question was asked after a very thorough Bible study. It’s like the question asked Peter in Acts 2:37, “What shall we do”? There are only two choices to these questions. One either walks away and let’s the choice bother them all the rest of their lives. Or they choose to do what God wants all of us to do by being baptized into Christ for the remission of our sins.

    • Mike Riley 2:53 am on April 11, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Jim, that question, “Now what will you do?” and the question asked by the Philippian jailor in Acts 16:30 are probably two of the most important questions an individual can ever ask.

    My Best Talant

Like Ron writes before me, I am not the best judge of my talents. When I have meditated on them, taking inventory as to what I can do best I find that I am mechanical and technologically orientated. However, those talents are not the best at serving the Lord. In the area of serving the Lord, I can do many and various things, but I am not the best but for a few. I like to communicate, encouraging and teaching others. I do have a gift of gab, which is probably what I am best at. I can pick on people in a humoreous way, that eases people. I do make a good Barnabas.

    My Favorite Conversion in Acts

My favorite conversion in Acts is the conversion of Cornelius. Why? With Cornelius being the first devout Gentile to be baptized into Christ, his conversion allowed me to become a child of God also. His conversion also had to be one with convincing evidence to be accepted by the Jews. I believe there were two things that convinced Peter; the blanket in chapter 10 and the descending of the Holy Spirit.

This conversion is one the most mis-understood conversions by the “faith only” denominational world.

I have a question for the fellowship members. In Aug. of 2009 I created a blog page on preacherfiles.com at
http://jimnewsted.preachersfiles.com/ Up to today I have received 67 comments, recently 2-3 a day. I post the same thing on a WprdPress blog. Zero comments. My question, why the difference? Would anyone care to look at it and/or answer the reason for comments posted on one and not the other.

    • joe 3:53 am on April 7, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Probably the answer is the amount of trafic going to the other page is greater.

      • Lee Parish 8:57 pm on April 7, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I would agree. Preachersfiles is a well read site, and that brings many people to the blogs. Therefore your readership is going to be much higher.

Lee’s answer most likely accounts for the great difference. Also, if you’ve had the PF blog longer, that could contribute to it getting more attention, means you’ve probably advertised it more.

    A Holy Celebration

Today as on every first day of the week we celebrate in remembrance the death, burial and resurrection of Christ our Savior as in Act 20:7. We partake of the bread as the pure and righteous body that suffered and died for us; drink the blood shed for the remission of our sins. Praise His Holy name.

I posted this on FB this morning. Some have copied and pasted on their home page. Feel free to do the same or simular to keep the truth moving forwards.

Most influential Person in My Life.

I would have to say an elder in the Falls of Nuce church of Christ in Raleigh, NC. I had been absent from God for a number of years and he went out of his way to greet and welcome me the first time I visited the congregation. I tried to sneak out the door and he followed me. After talking for a while and encouraging me to return, which I did and confessed my prodicalness, he became my mentor. As for someone presently in my life I would have to say Jim Reyna, a preacher in a neighboring town, where I attended for a number of years. He finally received a liver transplant in Oct. 2009. He was suffering from Hepatitis C, from a tainted blood transfusion.Prior to his transplant he went through four life threatening incidents from vein back pressure to the liver causing vein leakage and ruptures. Nearly died twice. After the transplant they had to go back in twice to fix both the left and right arterial blood vessels to the liver for blockage. On march 12th his liver examinations show signs of rejection. They sent him back to Baylor Univ. Med. Center for in depth examination where they found the Bile duct to be the problem. He went back into surgery to have it reconstructed, then went back in again due to internal bleeding. He is coming home today. His stamina is an inspiration to me. I personally may have given up a long time ago.

    Car or Computer Give Up

I would rather give up my computer because I need my car. I don’t have to have a computer. For me a computer is a luxury. As a matter of fact, after coming down with the Crud (best overall description of a two week illness) I found little interest in the computer. Therefore I have resolved to do less with it. I unsubscribed to a number of emails, have used it for Bible study, posting my blogs, using it for information searches, and have only been on Facebook to check on one persons status. This is one of the few nudges I have responded to, altough I read all the postings here via email. My future participation my become sporadic. Can I do without my computer altogether, No. But I can sure be less active on it. It is a time robber.

    My Favorite Proverb

Mike has already used my most favorite one, because there was a time I had to quote it to myself throughout a day. In that Proverbs are truisms some of the best are found in chapter 26. Wisdom can be found in these, but better yet, remembering them will better your life.

    My Favorite Prophet is…

My favorite prophet is Malachi. Israel thought they could cheat God, but through Malachi God let them know what he thought of them. I find a lot of human reasoning argued to God in the 4 chapters. Seems things don’t really change. Man still puts his reasoning up as excuses to do other than what God wants or deserves.

    Hear Him!

All the events at the mount contributed to giving Jesus honor and glory from the Father – 2Pe 1:17 “For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,”‘ The glorious transfiguration of Christ. The presence (and subsequent absence) of Moses and Elijah. The voice from heaven, acknowledging Christ as God’s Son.

What does God desire of us today…? Not tabernacles or temples erected in the memory of His Son, but for us to simply obey what God said at the mount: “Hear Him!” If we desire to add to the honor and glory that Jesus so richly deserves, and to one day behold His majesty in heaven, then be careful to heed what He himself said regarding His authority:

“All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”Mt 28:18-20

    Are we listening?

If Jesus is Lord then “All authority” both in heaven and on earth is now His Matt 28:18). He now rules in the heavenly realm – 1 Pe 3:22 “who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.”; Ep 1:20-23 “that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.” He also rules over the kings of the earth! – Re 1:5 “and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood “; Psa 2:1-12 “Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against his Anointed, saying, “Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.” He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision. Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying, “As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.” I will tell of the decree: The LORD said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you. Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.” Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.”; 110:1-6 “The LORD says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.”Psa 110:2 The LORD sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies! Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power, in holy garments; from the womb of the morning, the dew of your youth will be yours. The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.” The Lord is at your right hand; he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath. He will execute judgment among the nations, filling them with corpses; he will shatter chiefs over the wide earth.”

With “all authority” in heaven and on earth Jesus certainly deserves our obedience to Him as Lord – Ac 2:36 “Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”; Lk 6:46 “‘Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?” Jesus certainly can deliver on His promises – 2 Pe 1:2-5 “May grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge,
In light of the above I must be a willing servant and steward in full obedience to Him and His word.

    The Crown of Her Husband

“An excellent wife is the crown of her husband, but she who brings shame is like rottenness in his bones.” Proverbs 12:4. I am so proud and thankful that God has given me an excellent wife. She would tell me thank you but play down her excellence if she knew I was writing this. However, she has a compassion for others that is her outstanding character trait. Every Sunday evening she gets the bulletin and makes cards for the sick, ailing, and those with birthdays and anniversaries. That’s right right, “makes”! She uses a publishing program on her PC. Another is her love and compassion for a sister that has a husband dying of cancer. Our brother could go on to be with the lord right now within minutes, hours, to a few days. He laps into a coma Sunday evening. She calls them all the time to check on Martha and her daughters, offers to do anything for them, or offers anything she can to smooth their sorrow. An excellent wife, and my crown. Just thought I wopuld share with you what makes my life complete.

    Trials That Make One Stronger

It would be hard for me to single out one specific trial that has made me stronger, because all of them have. From trials of grief, trials as a result of my own creation, to physical trials. This is why Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” means a lot to me. I am also mindful of Ph 4:6-7 “do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” and also Ph 4:4 “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.”

    Keeping a Good Attitude

How do you keep a good attitude? Sometimes that’s a problem for me when I let something get under my skin. The biggest emotion for me to overcome are lazy or “don’t care” people. That is when my irritation shows, even when I try to not let it. It’s in my voice before I realize it. How do I get over it. I just to have ask and tell myself it’s importance, then move on. I also have a problem with my own physical ailments at times. Yesterday was one of those days. I was in pain when sitting at my PC and then it became a slug. A little self talk on the importance of what I wanted to do. Told myself it wasn’t and started doing somethings to revive the speed. By the time that was accomplished it was too late to do much. I missed responding to a couple of nudge responses, but I appreciated being able to read all of your responses.

My Most Positive Word For Today

My most positive word for today has to be “influence”. In the 68 and 1/2 years of my life there have been many things influence my life. Some were good to very good, and some were bad. I thank God that I have been able to shuck the bad and keep the good. It was the influence of a grandmother to a grand-daughter that exposed me to the truth of salvation and the means by which one is saved. Therefore be thankful for the good influences in your life and praise God for those that influenced you in a positive direction. Take those same influences and pass them on to someone else.

Bill Singleton’s recent report has been posted. Go to the “Great Works” on the right hand side bar which will take you to the Melrose church of Christ website. Here are his closing remarks.
We need older, Bible sound men to help teach the leadership classes we try to have every two months. We need older ladies experienced in working with youth in Sunday school programs to help train ladies in that great service. An older couple with husband and wife both sound, experienced teachers, would be ideal for this service. Next time you take a vacation consider spending it in the service of the Lord. If you would like to help us, have your elders contact the elders at the Melrose church of Christ at

    Ideas to Revive a Church

I missed yesterdays Daily Nudge, but want to say Amen to all of those that responded. I have no ideas, because if I had I would be putting them into practice. Our congregation has dropped from a one time 200 + to an average of 55-60. Some of the highs had to do with some preachers that had charismatic personalities. We do not even have enough young people of any age to have anything but adult Bible classes on Sunday night and Wed. night. On Sunday mornings there will be around ten 18-25 year olds. But the majority of the congregation ranges from mid-forties on up. What I am trying to say is that we are an old peoples congregation. I’mafraid that some day it won’t be but a small handful.

If you have ten 18 to 25 year old out of 60 attending then that is an excellent percentage. I have asked this question sadly few people seem to have ideas. If you church wants a shot in the arm of ideas and motivational message I’d be glad to come stir them up a little. Let me share with you some things we have done. are doing in the last few years.

      1. friend day. Yes it is simple we had an increase in attendance of about 50 that is about a 20 percent increase. We have followed up and have continued Bible studies going from this.

      2. Marriage class. – i teach these from time to time to the community. I just started one and I have one couple outside the church attending. I have others who may be in the class starting next week.

      3. Newsletter Evangelism. Pass out newsletter for 8 weeks and then knock doors. We had 5 obey the gospel and made a lot of good friendly contacts.

      4. If you have no other idea just invite everyone who wants to see the church grow and is willing to help to join a special class, small group, sunday lunch meeting etc to pray and talk about how to grow.

I appreciate your reply and suggestions. Suggestions 1 – 3 has been done over and over with results, but they have not lasted. Suggestion 4 is viable and would be a good place to start. We need to go find those that have left and bring them back first.

Jesus said that people would recognize us as his disciples because we love one another. I think the biggest obstacle in keeping people is them seeing love in the church. Just read a great post about the reason some small groups grow and others do not. The result of the research showed the leaders own personal prayer life was the biggest determining factor. The implication is people are only attracted to Jesus by people who are attached to Jesus. You need to work on attaching people to Jesus.

Joe, do you have a source where I can get a copy of the research. I would hate to go to the elders with this info all by itself. I agree we need to work on attaching people to Jesus. It’s like Randal commented not to long ago, It comes down to making Jesus Lord in and of our lives.

    My Favorite Biblical Plant

Like Randal, my favorite Biblical plant is the date. Just thinking about them makes my mouth yearn to taste it’s sweetness. The picture Randal posted reminds me of a date palm that was right outside the apartment door when we lived in Phoenix, AZ. What a way to feast on fresh dates. Just step outside and pick a few. A family we know in Yuma comes here every year around Christmas time to visit his mother and brings us some dates because he knows I love them. I get a few before my wife takes them away and puts them in the freezer for use in baking. Figs are ok. I like them also, especially in Newtons, :).

    About Me

Randal mentioned a bio in an off site email. Here is a short one.

Hello to all, I am 68 year old male, living in Shamrock, TX (located at the crossroads of I-40 and Hwy 83) in the Eastern TX Panhandle. I have been a Christian since 1966, being baptized in Phoenix, AZ, where I also met and married my wife. I have two daughters and a son. One daughter (oldest) and son were baptized in their teens, however none are living their lives as Christians. I have seven grandchildren, ages 10 to 18 (graduated May). Our first grandchild lived about 24 hours; was born with reversed heart valves; in 1988. For a number of years I ministered in grief support which I got involved in through a Christian professor who had lost his son about the same time. I presently moderate a Christian grief support group. I have taught adult, teen and pre-teen classes with my wife as an aide. I found that when teaching teen and pre-teen classes it is wise to have a female available to answer some of the questions of the young females. Worked out well for us.

    Morning or Night Person?

I am a morning person. I am up most of the time around 4:00 AM, no alarm. After some coffee and medication I am on my knees in prayer for about 20 mins. Then more meds. and breakfast. I use my PC for Bible study and eat my breakfast at the same time. By 6:00 AM I am ready for a short nap because of the meds. Then off to the shower. This is pretty well my routine 7 days a week. This also makes me a person of routine, which is fine with me. I like to know what Im going to be doing and when I’m going to do it.

Today’s Daily Nudge ask if there is a unique practice in our congregation. I don’t believe there is anything unique about announcements, 2 songs, prayer, song, Lord’s Supper, giving, song, the sermon and 2 songs followed by a closing prayer. Evening service follows the same pattern with the exception of the Lord’s Supper which is offered after the closing song and prayer. The only thing that might be considered unique is that on the last Sunday of the month we gather after the evening service to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries that occurred in that month.

How did someone encourage me lately? I have been encouraged through TFR contributors. Through their comments and postings. I have been encouraged by the goodness (generosity) of God’s people in the benevolent work for one brother in Christ.

Where Did I Get My Given Name

In response to yesterdays Daily Nudge, which I did not find time to be on the puter much, I was given the name James from my Uncle James. He was name as my godfather. He did his part in that capacity, although I learned some things my Mother did not like at all. I go by Jim as James is sophisticated and Jimmy is more or less youngish. At least that is the way I felt about it. My sister still calls me Jimmy or James. As you will see, I use the monochure of jimnewy in the internet world. It is a combination od the two nicknames Jim and one my MIL used to call me, Newy. A long time ago I used my given and last name, Jim Newsted as a Word Press user name for access to the preacherfiles forum, and I tried use it and add the fellowship room to it, but it didn’t want to let me, some I just created another account using jimnewy.

Well, my dear namesake, the PF forum is hosted privately and it’s different software, so that’s why WP.com wouldn’t let you acess The Fellowship Room. Even if it had been a blog on PF, wouldn’t have worked, even though it’s the same software.

There is the Open ID that’s growing in acceptance, to have a single username everywhere, but I don’t know if WP allows that or not.

Well, James, I figured that out when I tried to add my preachersfiles blog to the same dashboard as TFR so I would not have to logout of one and login to the other. That is why I had to use a different username. I don’t know about open id and a single username. I use RoboForm that encrypts all the information because I use different names and passwords. I can’t remember them all. The software creates a toolbar. When you go to a site, you hold your mouse over the site name and click on “fill form” or “fill and submit”, Wallah! I am there. I can also use the logins list like a bookmark file. Just click on the website I want and it logs me in automatically when the site and login prompt comes up. An old man with a sometimes muddled minds needs this kind of help.

    My Most Used Bible Version

My most used Bible Version is the English Contemporary Version, but as a carry Bible I use the NKJV. Like a lot of the others, I grew up on the KJV and the opinion of my parents was that all the other versions were trash, :). If I want a literal translation I will use the ASV. In my e-Sword program I have ASV, CEV, ESV, ISV, KJV, KJV+ and the RV where I can do comparisons and look at parallels. I used to use and carry the NIV, but after reading an article by Mark Treske I went and bought both Linda and I a copy of the NKJV, which we love.

When Do I Grow the Most Spiritually? When I have to lean on

When I have to lean on and depend on Him the most. There have been times in my life when I have had to put Prov. 3:5-6 into practice. When I have struggled to understand myself when I was younger. When we lost our first grandchild within 24 hrs. after he was born due to reversed heart valves. When no human could answer or help. Like Randal, there have been moments in my life when I was at the end of my rope. Time and space would not allow me to relate the number of times in my life when I have had to put all, and I mean all my trust and faith in Him. I certainly do not want to grow spiritually that way, but I did. My growth today comes from Bible study and prayer which I look forward to every morning.

For today and every Lord’s day. And certainly every day.
Ps 100 “Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth! Serve the LORD with gladness! Come into his presence with singing! Know that the LORD, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! For the LORD is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.. In this psalm we find a call to come to the Lord with joy, thanksgiving and praise. Why? “For the LORD is good…” – Ps 100:5a.

    Welcome to Joy And Don.

Although I have not met you personally, I welcome you to The Fellowship Room. As a matter of fact I have not met anyone of the contributors here face to face, nor shook hands, or hugged one another. I love and appreciate all that are in the Lord and that offer encouragement to God’s children. I look forward to your additional input.
