    Corruption 

         It is a mantra of Hollywood and others in the entertainment community to declare that their particular form of occupation (or entertainment) in no way can be linked to bad behavior. Violent video games,  secular and vulgar music, movies that portray godly values as a drag on a person or community, and such like cannot be scientifically be shown to affect society adversely, they assert.

    Someone forgot to tell the Lord about scientific studies. “Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals” (1 Cor. 15:33, ESV). The context of the remark in Corinthians pertains to those who deny the possibility of the resurrection; Paul deals with this denial as it relates to the Lord. He makes the application that with such influence being present, one is merely deceived to think it won’t pass from one to another. RT

    One example of self-destructive behavior in the New Testament is Judas. He not only committed physical suicide, but spiritual suicide as well.

    Are we like whitewashed tombs? 

    “Behavior is what a man does, not what he thinks, feels, or believes!” This statement was posted on the Internet with following comments commending the author as being insightful. I agree in the strictest sense of the word — the first dictionary definition of the word is, “observable activity in a human or animal”. However it totally ignores the relationship between out thoughts, feelings and beliefs and how we behave. The second dictionary definition, “the aggregate of responses to internal and external stimuli” points toward this relationship.

    The statement seems to ignore this relationship and rather reinforces the commonly held false belief that it doesn’t matter what one thinks, feels, or believes: all that matters is what one does. This could not be further from the truth and contradicts Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 5. Jesus here teaches that while the old law focused on bad behavior, we need to focus on getting our hearts right — that is, get our thoughts and feelings under control. If we control our thoughts and feelings, we will not behave badly.

    It is sad to see such misunderstandings in the world. But sometimes I wonder if members of God’s household do not think this way at the core. If we do, are we not like white-washed tombs?

    “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.” Matthew 23:27

      Laura, I’ll agree that “behavior is what a man does,” but what he “thinks”, “feels”, or believes, directly influences his behavior.

    Good examples 

    I had the privilege of giving my parents a surprise 50th wedding anniversary party a few weeks ago. It’s sad, but so few couples make it that far in our society these days that I wanted to make a really big deal out of it. So… we had a fully catered reception and invited their entire congregation with professionally printed invitations. All my siblings and their entire families attended. I think it’s really important to positively reinforce good examples so that society sees how it *should* behave. It’s also important to set these examples before our children so they see what is right and acceptable before God.
