    Listening to the Bible

A few months ago, I downloaded a digital audio book of the complete NKJV on the laptop. I listen to it when I am at the office and not studying. I’m honored that I was able to listen to the entire Old Testament for the first time. It is 46 hours long which shows just how long the OT really is. I’ve listened to the NT dozens of times but every time is fresh and wonderful. I am enjoying Matthew right now.

I hope to listen to the entire Bible two more times this year, which is a blessing. The entire book is 60 hours, so it takes awhile. :)

We have so many tools to use in Bible Study. Yet, brethren may study less than at any time since the Restoration began. Few things are as sad as that.

    Study the Word!

Richard, would you mind sharing your source for the digital audio book? Do I understand the OT is 46 hours and the entire Bible recording is 60 hours? I have been in other folks outer buildings ( like a shop, garage or barn) and they make a point to leave on their religious music 24/7. However I would welcome the opportunity to offer God’s Word 24/7 in our greenhouse area.

You can go to Amazon and put in the particular version you like and audio digital or CD and find your options. Here is the one I own:

        http://tinyurl.com/78mx9l7

There is a negative review because the audio book is divided in 16 sections and you can’t go to specific passages. Yet, if you want continuous play, it will be great. You would just have to click the next track after a few hours.

    Bible Knowledge

Some treat Bible knowledge as if it comes with a light-dimmer switch.

They find something they don’t like and then slowly begin to turn the light down till it’s gone.

The power of the light to “enlighten” remains, but the dark veil of intentional ignorance prevents it from shinning.

Such is the way we will all attempt to soothe our conscience if we’re not careful.

And we have given up the secret things of shame, not walking in false ways, and not making use of the word of God with deceit; but by the revelation of what is true, as before God, we have the approval of every man’s sense of right and wrong. But if our good news is veiled, it is veiled from those who are on the way to destruction: Because the god of this world has made blind the minds of those who have not faith, so that the light of the good news of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, might not be shining on them. For our preaching is not about ourselves, but about Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your servants through Jesus. Seeing that it is God who said, Let light be shining out of the dark, who has put in our hearts the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” (2 Corinthians 4:2-6 BBE)

It’s more of a “cafeteria” type knowledge – choosing our favorites and leaving the rest behind (i.e., “why do we need to study the old testament?).

Never have understood that sentiment toward the OT. To have that sentiment toward it is to have no idea what it contains.

        Thanks for the comment, Mike.

A shame to waste the “Word” YahooGroup

What an amazing discovery, some months ago, that the name “Word” had not been taken already to create a group on YahooGroups. So we did. But the email discussion group has not taken off. Would you help make this group a go and take advantage of such a great name?

See the group page here, or join up right now by email.

We’d like to find someone to manage the group, to take it and run with it. If you know of a good candidate, let us know.

I saw two posts of yours on WORD list yesterday. The latter I’m still pondering. May be a bit of a job resurrecting the participation of the list members.

Well, at least I know it made it. I think you’re right with regard to the difficulty of resurrecting it. I can’t monitor it because of time and ability; you probably have more on your plate already. Your encouragement, however, is worth the effort because surely there is a “timothy” out there that might be interested in doing such.

    Holiday Depression?

Some people fear the holidays because they believe they will suffer deep depression and may more likely commit suicide

According to an article written in the Cleveland “Plain Dealer” newspaper, suicides are actually lower during the month of December than at any other time of the year.

People do experience grief more acutely during the holidays mainly because there are traditions they’ve developed that strongly remind them of loved ones they’ve lost.

An example was a woman who lost her family to a plane crash. They had always celebrated the holidays in Florida, a tradition the woman continued after her family was killed. She became distraught during the holiday, but continued to go to Florida and sat on the beach sobbing.

One method of decreasing the depression is by changing the tradition.

A better way is to lift oneself up with the scriptures’ teaching about resurrection and eternity. Studying the scriptures can allow one to see above the sorrow. Do you believe Jesus can help you climb above it?

Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26 ESV).

Obedience to Jesus allows one to see a new life, and that life in Christ never really ends..

Thanks for the good reminder, John! It’s easy to get depressed when we’re faced with the changes that the passing of time brings about. All we can do is fully trust in the One who never changes (Proverbs 3:5-6; Malachi 3:6), and then go about doing good (Acts 10:38).

    The Joy of Bible Study

Will you share your thoughts on the joy of Bible Study? Why do you enjoy it? What does it do for you besides give you the Word of God?

    • Mike Riley 7:03 pm on October 1, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Why do I enjoy Bible study?

      1) Because I receive insight into the mind of God through the inspired words provided by the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:11-12).
      2) Because I receive spiritual edification and renewal from the inspired words that I read and ingest into my mind (2 Corinthians 12:19; Romans 12:2).
      3) Because God’s word helps me not to sin (Psalm 37:31; Psalm 119:11).
      4) Because God’s word is a light (Psalm 119:105), illuminating the right path for me to take in my walk here on earth (Proverbs 3:5-6), that I might be pleasing to Him (John 4:34; John 5:30; John 6:38; John 8:29)
      5) Because through daily Bible study, I learn to put on the characteristics of my Lord (loving, merciful, forgiving, compassionate, humble, etc.) to become more like Him (Gal. 2:20).
      6) Because I can look at the history of God’s people and learn from their examples (Romans 15:4; cf. Hebrews 3:5-13; Hebrews 11; Hebrews 12:14-17; Jude 1).
      7) Because I love God and desire to keep His commandments (John 14:15; John 15:14; 1 John 2:3), Bible study being one of those commandments (2 Timothy 2:15).
      8) Because I love sharing the Word of God with others and interacting with them (2 Timothy 2:1-2), and you can’t teach what you don’t know (Hebrews 5:12-13).

There are many other reasons why I enjoy Bible study, but the above reasons will suffice for now.

Diane Grantham leads Bible study at nursing home

“She goes about doing good,” could easily be said about Diane Grantham, a member of the Geneva church.

Residents at the local nursing home know and love Diane because she visits regularly. Always with a smile and a kind word, she does go about doing good. Often she will pick up some nice gift with a certain resident in mind. She gets great pleasure from making one of her beloved friends smile.

Recently one of the patients at the Geneva Nursing Home suggested to Diane that she should teach a ladies Bible class at the home. With her positive attitude, and love of teaching, she took the necessary steps to secure a time slot on the monthly calendar. She was given one Monday night a month. Recently she taught her first class with a total of six in attendance.

Diane taught the gospel to one of the female residents recently. Due to her size and being an amputee, she was baptized in a local swimming pool in her wheelchair. Diane’s love for the Lord is ever shining in all walks of her life. May her example encourage others to go and do likewise.

    Studying Revelation Chapter 6

I am studying this challenging chapter today, in preparation for Bible Class tonight. What are your thoughts about this chapter?

Coffman start his thoughts on the chapter with the wide divergence of opinions that exist on what all the images mean. Personally, I’m not really concerned about figuring out each image. The overall spiritual message is what is important to me.

You really have to restrain your imagination when studying Revelation or you will work yourself into delusion. For example, commentators debate the identity of the rider on the white horse. But, Coffman puts it succinctly:  “A crown in the scriptural sense upon the head of some profane conqueror is impossible to believe.”

In this chapter, I think it is better to take a sweeping perspective on the action. The more narrow we become, the blurrier the spiritual message. We cannot put individual names on these other riders. They are representative.

I guess 6:12-14 are the most challenging passages. What do you think they mean?

I appreciate your thoughts on this chapter in advance.

    • Ron 9:29 am on August 24, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Richard, I look at the Revelation in this sort of way: Chapters 6 – 11 are one scene, Chapter 12:20 are another scene. I am in the minority, but that helps me process it better. Moreover, I think your remark relative to a sweeping perspective is wise. Greg Swango wrote a book on Revelation with this in view (Star Publishers).

    • Mike Riley 11:00 am on August 24, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Richard, for what it’s worth, here’s my stab in interpreting Revelation 6:

Revelation 6:1-2 – First Seal – The White Horse – Here we have a picture of the conquering Christ who rides a “white horse” (cf. Revelation 19:11-16). He is pictured here as being as on who “conquers” (cf. Rev. 14:14; Rev. 17:14). All Christians who are “in Christ” overcomes (1 John 5:4). He goes forth to conquer sinners by the saving Gospel of Christ (Romans 1:16). Christians are literally saved in order to save others.

Revelation 6:3-4 – Second Seal – Red Horse – Here we see a picture of suffering and persecution of Christians who have been “conquered” by the gospel. Paul tells us that persecution will follow one who names the name of Christ (2 Timothy 3:12). We may even be persecuted by our own family (Matthew 10:34-39) if we become a New Testament Christian.

Revelation 6:5-6 – Third Seal – Black Horse – Here is a picture of economic discrimination upon those who obeyed the gospel message (those who were “conquered” by Christ in vs. 2). Also see Revelation 13:17. The measures presented in this text had just enough purchasing power to just barely keep a family alive with no extra money for other necessities of life. Soon, they would more than likely die. Thus, we have death being pictured in vs. 7-8.

Revelation 6:7-8 – Fourth Seal – Pale Horse – Death and Hades (the Hadean realm) closely followed those Christians who were faithful to the Lord (Revelation 2:10). Also compare with Ezekiel 5:16-7 and Ezekiel14:21. Also note the suffering and persecution of those who were faithful in the Old Testament (Hebrews11:32-40).

Revelation 6:9-11 – Fifth Seal – Here we see pictured the souls who were slain for the Word (martyrs, such as Stephen in Acts 7). Note they were “under the altar” and “before the throne” (Rev. 8:3). They cry out for God to render vengeance upon the enemy (cf. Deuteronomy 32:43; Luke 18:7-8). Note in verse 11 that each martyr was given “white robes” indicating their “overcoming” (cf. Revelation 7:13-14). Also note, they are to “wait” for other faithful brethren to be killed and join them (cf. Revelation 20:4).

Revelation 6:12-17 – Sixth Seal – Here we see divine judgment being announced. Compare the symbols here with Isaiah 13:10-11 and Isaiah 34:1-5 to see the complete picture. This symbolism cannot refer to the end of the world, simply because we still have the seventh seal left. Also note that in verses15-16, we have folks hiding in caves and fleeing to the mountains asking the rocks to fall on them (note similar symbolism in Hosea 10:8). These actions will be of no avail when the Lord actually comes back again and the creation is burned up (2 Peter 3:10-11). The key to these verses is found in the last question in verse 17, “who shall be able to stand” (compare with Nahum 1:5-6). The only ones able to “stand” the onslaught of God’s judgment, would have been faithful saints (note the word “stand” in Ephesians 6:11,13).

We also need to remember that all of the above events were to “shortly come to pass” (Revelation 1:1) – applicable to those saints living in the first century.

The new Forthright Magazine is online

It’s up and running. The new Forthright Magazine. Whew! I’m going to need a nap after that one.

Also, I’ve got a new devotional this morning on my little site.

As usual, I’ll be out most of the day with the church. SJCampos in the morning, lunch with the brethren, Taubaté in the afternoon. Maybe tonight for the Internet.

Google+ appears to be bearing some good fruit already. Its option to communicate by email with people in the Circles (groups) who aren’t in the loop works well for communicating.

Time to fly. A blessing on you this Lord’s day.

    Chapter by Chapter: Ephesians (alternate)

Here is an alternate chapter-by-chapter rundown of Ephesians (not original with me, though I don’t know where I got it).  This one focuses on the overall theme of the book, the church of Jesus Christ.  Someone once wrote that Colossians could be summed up with “The Christ of the Church” as its theme, & Ephesians could be summed up with “The Church of the Christ” as its theme.

    Ch. 1—The church: Christ’s body

Ch. 2—The church: The house/temple of God

Ch. 3—The church: Declaring the wisdom of God

Ch. 4—The church: Perfection & unification of the church

Ch. 5—The church: The spotless bride of Christ

Ch. 6—The church: The army of God

    Study Bible notes: Acts 4

Here’s the reading for today in the NET Bible version. Add your concise notes on a word, phrase, or even a segment of the chapter, and we’ll choose some of them for inclusion in the final document on Acts.

These are my subtitles for the main sections in Acts 4:

    • The Boldness of Peter and John (1-22)
    • Disciples Pray for Boldness (23-31)
    • Unity and Generosity (32-37)

29 “with great courage” They didn’t ask for persecution to cease, but for them to continue to speak with courage. The Lord honored their request, since this was his will, that the gospel be preached regardless of reactions.

18 “And they called them in and ordered them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.” No technical note, but a simple observation: apparently, this plan failed.

Walk in the Spirit means, “to possess the Seven Spirits of God, received by prayer, in New Jerusalem (New Covenant kingdom of the Living God). These are: One Body (From Calling in First Century; but New Jerusalem now), One Spirit (Wisdom), One Hope (Knowledge), One Lord (Iesous’ riches), One Faith (Bibe), One Dipping (Dippiong),One God (Adoption) – Ephesians 4.4-6; ana several others.
“If anyone have not Spirit of Anointed, he is not of Him” – Rom. 8.9.

I have written an “exhaustive” commentary on Romans. I may be the only expositor to have undersdtood the book. The Pope teaches, as you have posted, “Chsps 1 & 2 about Gentiles. Paul wrote 3 times, “To the Jew first and to the Greek also.” I have located every phrase in Chps 1 & 2 in the OT applying to the Jews. You should learn to, “Quit reciting ther Pope.”

Sid, thanks for the comment, but please don’t attempt to read my mind. You clearly are unable to do so. I am not Catholic, and I’m certainly not going to lean upon a fallible man for my understanding of Scripture, but I can read, and I stand by the summary given of Romans 1-2.

    Literal Reading

I am a novice at Greek. Yet, I enjoy using the tools that I have to do research on God’s Word. I enjoy the word studies that we can do as students of the inspired Scripture. In the process, I get my NKJV Greek  English New Testament Interlinear out and read what the passage says in a literal translation. Even though their word orders differ from ours, their usage does illuminate some interesting nuances that can be special to the student and teacher as they prepare to impart lessons to their listeners.

For example, John 14:23 says in the NKJV,  “Jesus answered and said to him, ‘If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.’”

However, the literal reading in my Interlinear paints a more passionate and personal version of the same verse. It says, “answered – Jesus and said to him ‘If anyone loves  Me,  word My he will keep. And – Father My will love him, and to him We will come and Our abode with him We will make.”

That is wonderful to me. “…loves Me, word My he will keep…” They are one and same! The Word and the Savior cannot be separated.  “father My” is also poignant and denotes a passionate bond between them. Finally, I love the statement: “to him We will come and Our abode with him We will make.” That is so much more expressive than the English in my mind.

If we would look at the Word, the Savior and the Kingdom in such personal, familial terms, we would all have a deeper relationship with them.
