    Scariest Nights of My Life

I recently wrote about our harrowing ordeal with an out of control forest fire that burned 4,035 acres and could have decimated our community. We were saved by the heroic efforts of fire fighters and emergency personnel.

That experience brought to mind two other nights where natural disasters brought death and destruction to our lives.

The first was on February 5, 2008 in Jackson, Tennessee. I arrived in Henderson, Tennessee for the Freed-Hardeman lectureship and enjoyed the day immensely. That evening I drove to my hotel in Jackson to check into my room. The weather grew worse as I got closer. I turned off my audiobook and discovered that there was a tornado warning.

At the hotel, I was unable to check in because the power was out. I was ushered into the laundry room and told to get under a blanket since a category 4 tornado was two miles away. One of my friends, Tony Fitzgerald and his family were there and we all spent the night praying that we would not be killed.

The tornado hit Union University and damaged 31 buildings, doing $40 million in damage. I finally went to my room in the early morning and slept some before waking up and checking in. The staff at the hotel were extraordinary.

    Pray for the Suffering

A monster earthquake of 8.9, one of the highest ever recorded, hit Japan causing a Tsunami that has already killed at least 60 people. Now, the entire Pacific is threatened by Tsunamis. Of course, that includes Hawaii. We pray for all of the suffering, especially our brethren who are in danger. Join us in prayer, please.

I’ve asked people I know close to the work in Japan about the status of our brethren there. Am watching a video of the waters off Hawaii for the tsunami.

Just a note or two before shutting down tonight. (At this time of year, we’re four hours ahead of Central USA time.)

Our family will be traveling with friends tomorrow evening to get away for a few days. We’ll return on Wednesday. I have no idea if wifi will be available. I almost hope not. In any case, my access will be nil or limited until the middle of next week.

The WP web snow is getting cut off the 4th, so I went ahead and turned it off and switched photos. Above, a tropical beach. I won’t see this beach next week, since we’re headed inland, but millions of Brazilians are on the beach now, at least, those that didn’t have their vacation abruptly ended by rains and mudslides, mostly in Rio de Janeiro state, between us and the capital. So far, almost 70 have been confirmed dead. Please pray for relief and for those families who lost loved ones.

For those of you in colder climes, feel the warmth of the tropics. I’ve been feeling it for some weeks now.

See you Wendesday, Lord permitting, if not before.
